Miyamoto: We're making Zelda 'easier'

taken from http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20005302-17.html

The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto believes the famed franchise is too difficult for gamers. And in a recent interview with German gaming outlet Gaming Media, he said he's working on making it easier.

Miyamoto told the publication that the last few generations of Zelda games have been too complicated for gamers to get into. He said he and his team are "creating a new way to play the game."

Unfortunately, the wildly successful developer didn't divulge how he planned to change the way players interact with the next game in the franchise. He also wouldn't discuss what kind of changes would be made to the game's overall mechanics to make it more gamer-friendly.

"We are trying to make Zelda, which has become very complicated, easier to play," Miyamoto said.

The Legend of Zelda series has gone through several changes throughout the years. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time brought the series into full 3D for the first time when it was released in 1998. After even more commercial success, the franchise then turned to cel-shaded design with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker when it launched in Japan in 2002 and North America in 2003. In other words, Miyamoto and his cohorts are willing to take chances.

Based on his comments, it doesn't sound like Miyamoto's changes will be as drastic as some of his previous alterations to the franchise, but they will likely be noticeable.

Look for more details on the next Zelda game at this year's E3 conference in June.

NOT exactly sure this news sits right with me. I've played these titles within the Legend of Zelda series: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. Each one was amazing and I played and replayed them because they were just that good. I loved the dungeon crawling, the puzzles, and how each game had it's own unique spin on Hyrule. But too difficult to play? I wouldn't go that far - unless they're wanting to make LoZ appealing to the mainstream casual gamers that currently define the majority of wii owners, and is causing Microsoft and Sony to jump on the motion controller bandwagon. This group doesn't exactly buy games. They sit at home playing Wii Sports. Dumbing down a beloved franchise just to appeal to a majority group who doesn't buy games sounds like a sure fire way to alienate the group that actually buys games - the gamers. :/ Don't think I'm looking forward to this E3 announcement...

No!!!!!!!!!! No no no no. I don't like this idea much at all. The whole point of zelda is having the challenging puzzles to solve and knowing how to properly utilize each new piece of equipment. I always felt the combat was always straight forward and even less skilled players can get by with potions and faeries. The only changes they could make that I could live with is an a hint option, sort of like the whatnot book in kameo, if you got stuck you could look up what to do next with out having to check online. Or if they added a sort of an objective list, if I put the games down for a few weeks when life gets in the way I always seem to forget what to do next.

I really like the casual games of wii, it makes it fun to play with all my friends but if they dumb down zelda... it's the only game that makes me happy about having the wii. I've been a long time nintendo fan my entire life and I can sadly say that I've switched to being an xbox girl because of the superior game selection and online play. I guess all we can do is hope Miyamoto knows what he's doing.

This kind of confuses me - the most recent Zelda's were too hard to play? I can't play the originals, but I've made it (the majority of the way) through all the ones that have been released since Gamecube/GBA...

Yeah, definitely confusing. When Miyamoto says "gamers", I definitely believe he means "Wii owners". Really sounds like they want to create a version of Zelda that will appeal to the average non-gamer wii owner. Wish they pick ANY other franchise but Zelda to do this. :(
