Kellogg Co. is recalling some 28 million boxes of cereal, saying some consumers could experience such temporary symptoms as nausea and diarrhea because of the liner in the packaging.
The cereal maker, working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said the voluntary recall covers its Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Fruit Loops and Honey Smacks cereals distributed nationwide with certain UPC codes with better-if-used-before dates ranging from March 26, 2011, to June 22, 2011.
Kellogg said the potential for serious health problems "is low" but some consumers are sensitive to the "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell" coming from the linings.
The company is "working diligently to ensure that the affected products are rapidly removed from the marketplace," said President and Chief Executive David Mackay.
A company spokesperson declined to say how many boxes of cereal Kellogg produces.
