Hello ladies...
I have been a fan of graphic novels for a while now and would love to start up a comic book club to review some of the great series out there.
I figured since there is a book club there should also be a comic book club.

Because it always takes forever to select a book everyone wants to read, I thought I would pick the first one to be reviewed.
First comic will be Scott Pilgrim - Precious Little Life. This is volume one of the Scott Pilgrim series.
Here is a link to the official Scott Pilgrim website, to get an idea what the art looks like.

No worries if you don't have this one (to be expected)...I will post my review of this book next week.
I think this is a good book to start out with due to the movie coming out this week, plus I have already read this comic and it is funny and clever.

Let me know what you ladies think...I am open to suggestions for the future. Would love it if we could get some discussions going about comics that are out.
Maybe next time we could talk about the portrayal of women in comics, treatment of female characters, strong women in comics.

Scott Pilgrim - Precious Little Life
A book report by Maribel21

Basic plot:
This comic is very straight forward, boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, girl tells boy if he wants to be with her he must defeat her 7 evil exes.
This is the story of the first evil ex boyfriend.

To begin, we are introduced to Scott Pilgrim, a 23 year old Canadian slacker, who is the bassist for the band Sex-Bob-omb.
I don't want to recount what happens in this book because that is what wikipedia is for. I would rather just mention some of the things I found interesting.
Interesting concepts introduced in this book : sub space portals, foes defeated and turned into coins, bands that can knock you out with sound, demon hipster chicks, glowing heads, Knives Chau, Ramona Flowers, girls who can say no, Wallace Wells

My opinion of this novel: I love it!!! This comic is funny, sweet and very cutely drawn. I think I also like this book because the women in it are snarky and strong willed (minus Knives - she is just a highschooler and hasn't found herself yet). It is Scott Pilgrim who seems to be weak for most of the book (and a mooch).
The art reminds me a bit of manga comics and is funny. There are lots of shout outs to gaming, music, and movies.

Who would I recommend this comic to? Everyone. There are things in this comic that people of all types can laugh at. If you are looking for a story about an underachiever who is trying to finally get something done - this is the story for you. Who doesn't root for the underdog?

Ok that is all I have to say for now...

Ask me questions or comment about this very sad review....

What should be the next comic discussed?

Scott Pilgrim is still on my want list. I just don't have enough $$ right now to buy them all and my local library does not carry them.
I have recently read Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It is a Batman graphic novel, but it well written. I would suggest reading The Killing Joke as well.

I did read Batman Year One finally...Liked it a lot but the art style was not my cup of tea. Great story.

I was thinking maybe we could have a discussion on the Walking dead series when the TV show comes out...that way we could compare the tv show to the graphic novel....
What do you think?

Also I heard that the scott pilgrim series is come out in a box set on amazon pretty soon for cheaper. Can you talk to your library to see if they can buy the comic so you can check it out? Wouldn't hurt...

Have you checked out The Sixth Gun? It's fairly new. And it's awesome. An old west comic, and it's brilliant. Hiiiiiighly recommend!!!

I will check it out... and we can discuss next week.
You should check out the The Dark Tower, it is pretty good but it is different than most comics. It is written more like you are watching a comic be narrated.

I'll try to do that! I'm always up for new comics that aren't the mainstream ones. Blech!
