Has anyone played Civilization V? I was thinking about picking it up and I don't know if I should hold off or get it since none of my local friends are into that genre of game.
If you did get it- What did you like? What didn't you? Any good fan mods? I loved the heck out of Civ IV, and it's going to be hard to top it IMO.
I have it and I really like it but I tend to play solo campaigns. I'm not big on the multiplayer aspect of Civ V. I like being able to play massive campaigns that can take weeks.
There are a lot of similarities to Civ IV but they've also made some changes. The tiles are hex's now instead of squares. It seems like a little thing but I really like that change. Also the graphics are amazing. Oh - armies don't stack anymore. If you are getting approached by an enemy you know exactly how many are coming to attack you now. They have this new thing called city states. They are little cities that are scattered about that aren't affiliated with any of the other civilizations. You can dominate them or befriend them. Every so often you'll see a request from them to do them a favor like annihilate a nearby city that they don't like. Gaining favor with these city states can give you perks - like they might send you free military units or your food production or culture is increased.
In some ways it's a more complex game but you can play it in a lot of different ways, which seems to make it more approachable. You can just go in and kill everything and everybody if you want or you can be very diplomatic and strategic and not even fight (well except for those annoying barbarians if you don't turn them off).
