I seem to be getting more and more friend requests from gamertags I don't know, so I figured I would start a thread so that I could ask if anyone else knew the tag(s) in question and whether it would be a good idea to accept or deny, and could give recommendations for the person behind the tag so to speak.
Currently I have one from a SharperNote, does anyone know this person? I just got a message from them out of the blue, from their bio it looks like they are a guy but that is all I can tell.
Also apologies if any of the tags mentioned are from people on here, and I missed that fact before posting here.
Sending them a message doesn't always work. There are some gamertags that will claim to be Xbox Ambassadors and appear to have friends in common with you. My husband and I both got a request from the same guy who claimed this and fortunately it was quickly followed by a message from one of our friends saying the guy was a fraud and would try to get information out of you so he could hijack your account.
While I'm sure that's the exception instead of the rule I don't think it's a bad idea to have a thread here just for an extra feeling of security.
I know for me I tend to ignore or delete the requests if I don't recognize the gamertag and we have no friends in common.
I usually ignore requests that come without a message (heck I don't know why Microsoft wouldn't allow to send a message TOGETHER with the friend request, or am I just too stupid to figure out how? I always have to do it in 2 steps), especially from random guys with a low gamerscore. If it's from a girl I'm more likely to write back and ask, but I don't just want to add "someone" if I don't even know yet if I'm ever going to play with him/her.
I think that is one of the gamer tags that tried to friend the popchix tag. I denied it and never got a message from them. Both for the popchix tag and my own I usually deny them if I don't know the person, have never played with them, and even if I have played with them I won't accept if we didn't talk or get along well.
I don't know how they even get gamertags to add when they don't them.
Thanks ladies! Yes, I do send messages asking do I know you, but I like to find out if any of my fellow Chix know the tag in question. I have had people message me and say we have played L4D when we have NEVER played. I can check because I rarely play public games and this person had claimed that we had and their tag wasn't in my list of recent matches so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a thread like this. I have also had people say does it matter to my query as to whether I know them. Well to me it does. I like to do all the research I can before I approve or deny a person if I don't personally know them or haven't actually met them through someone else.
Pooki - Just press delete.
I don't accept if I don't know you and I don't write a msg either - I feel like the person sending the invite has the burden of proving that the know me.
I think I am just jaded like that.
I usually spy on their profile to check their friends list/games played...if i don't know them then i just reject the invite. I figure if they know me they would send a msg saying who the hell they are...if not then oh well *deletes*

^ perfect plan of action. I usually check out the profile to see if I can view the friends list, recently played games, etc... If they look like they have had their score reset it's an automatic no. I also state in my profile that I would like a message with the request. It really does cut down on the random invites.
My profile:
My Friend's List consists of close friends and those I play with regularly. Please send a message with the Friend Requests but understand that random requests are respectfully declined.
I got a random one and messaged back, who is this. I got the answer "greg" - I was like, thanks that really narrows it down, I know about 4 gregs! So I messaged back with a few possibilities as to where I might know him from (nothing too specific, just from work, or so and so's son) and finally got the answer back of "from school". I know him and added him on but why didn't he just send a quick message to start with? Sooo annoying! Lol. If I get no answer, or they are too vague that they obviously don't know me I just delete.
I got a request for the popchix tag from heatherbabyy12 and I didn't recognize it either. I denied it. I think I asked in chat one day and someone else said they got a request from her and they asked how she knew them and she said she was just sending random friend requests out.
I posted about it in the silvertag thread and no one replied so I assume she isn't a part of popchix, but perhaps she should be?
Yeah... I usually do the same as everyone else, check their friends and my recent players, send a message... sometimes I add, sometimes I don't. Usually the only random adds that become friends are the one *I* send.
Is there any way to set your profile so people can't see your friends list?
I got a request from someone called Jockspartan and I added them but still can't see any friends, so does that mean I'm the only one?
I just figured it's probably a fellow scot but still can't figure out who it might be. I'll send a message when I can be bothered.
You can change your friends list to private, I had that in the the past. It's the "Online Safety Settings" under "Manage Account." Just change your friends list to "Blocked" and viola!
You can change it to private, but if you use the silvertag or things like that to find people then they won't be able to see you and you can't see anyone with those settings.
Yea. I played with her the other day and I think she went through my friendslist for the female sounding tags. She was trying to recruit for a clan or something that helps each other get achievments (I didn't really fully understand either.)
