The shoutbox/chatbox is what I was thinking. For a IM like Facebook, we would need to have the friend option like FB.

I think a forum shoutbox would be very nice, but I do not know if it comes with these forums
With IRC - I use a network called FFSNetwork for my other gaming needs - If you want a channel for popchix in there called #Popchix - I can go register it, to make sure no one else takes it, and tell you how to connect to it
That would mean I would be able to set up a Mibbit (Flash client for IRC) - can use from web for that - so you can connect to it directly without the need for mIRC etc
Let me know if you wish to go this way, and you would be willing to use it
Or with IRC
Could get out own address, like major nelson - but that would mean too much work

Yea, being an old topic, not so sure about how much attention it would get
I mean in order on complexity IMO
Shoutbox - Easy to use - hard to impliment - especially if forums dont allow it
IRC - Easy to use once set up - people might not use it though - and randoms can get in (can be fixed)
External Chat (MSN + others) People might not want to give that stuff up
