Ever since Oblivion, I have been a huge fan of games put out under Bethesda Softworks' umbrella. Fallout 3 will continue to be one of my favorite games of all time. Needless to say, I was so incredibly excited to hear about Fallout: New Vegas. Thanks to someone who cares very much for me, I was able to play it on launch day and I was immediately hooked. I put in about 32 hours in the first few days and helped my fiance through some levels. I scoffed when he kept hitting strange glitches blaming his lack of skills for his problems... That was until I started hitting the motherload. After about 60 hours, I finally made my way to the actual New Vegas. "What?" I hear you say - It was sort of intentional. I wanted to build up my character before hitting the strip. I'm also an explorer - I like to wander the wastelands finding everything I can. This can sometimes be detrimental due to my killing of potential quest triggers but it's my style and I'm sticking to it.

However, when I did decide to hit the strip, I did a quest that had me find a debtor and bring his hat back to some shady people. What I didn't notice, was that even though I had taken the hat, it somehow was still on his head. I returned my hat to the collection department and went on my merry way. That is - until I decided to try to get to the strip again. I go to the gate, go through and BAM! black screen. Ok, I'd been playing it a while so I go reset the Xbox and try again. SAME THING. Ok, this is just inappropriate. I reset one more time and try again. No dice. I am now locked out of Vegas. I wasn't willing to give up just yet, though. I want to love the game too much to just throw in the towel. I go do some other things hoping to trigger some magical un-buggering script and try a few hours later. Nope. I finally go to that Google thing and look to see if there are any other people reporting this. Sure enough, there are several people with this same unacceptable occurrence.

About a week later, someone figures out how to temporarily rectify the situation. Go find a cowboy hat and wear it at all times in the strip. WTF? I'm sorry but I paid $60 for a game where I can wear whatever I damn well please, not be forced to remember to wear a hat just to keep my game going. And the bugs didn't end there. I constantly fell through rocks, lost companions, got companions stuck where they shouldn't be, lost weapons, etc.

This was no longer a game I could stand behind. As much as I wanted to love this, it just didn't live up to my expectations. Getting into the strip is integral to the main story. I very much appreciate that PR can't apologize for things as it's an admission of guilt but I feel not enough was done on Obsidian/Bethesda's behalf to address this game-breaking bug. While a patch was put out to help those who lost game saves (man I would have shipped a bag of stinky... nevermind), nothing was said about this stupid hat thing.

This week is Black Friday - many game/electronic stores will have this game for sale for $35-$40. If the issues aren't fixed by then, I would hesitate on going anywhere near this game. And they're already announcing DLC. While I've almost completed the game, I think it's laughable that they are touting this DLC whlie these problems remain.

Bethesda - For the love of everything Pip, DO SOMETHING.

Was there anything redeeming about this game, you may ask? Well, the voice acting was superb. As to be expected with that spectacular lineup. The graphics left a lot to be desired in many places. The wasteland scenery was done very well but I noticed some interiors that were identical to places in Fallout 3. The main story is ok. Slightly boring but the character backgrounds make up for a lot of it. I am still hoping this will be a great game when the wrinkles have been ironed out but until then, I just can't stand behind it as much as I would love to.

Every new game I have played lately has been buggy. Halo Reach campaign is practically unplayable for me -- everytime I try to load a campaign, I get a disc read error. I have cleared updates, reinstalled the game to my harddrive at least 3 times, and still the same bug persists. But I would never rate the game with 2 stars because I can understand that not everyone will encounter the same error and what is playable is good. Sorry you've run into so many bugs with Fallout New Vegas -- and while I respect that you're pissed, I don't think it's fair to rate the game so low. I understand that you encountered a fatal error, but have you contacted Betheseda customer support about the bug? Did they respond or blow you off? The falling in rocks, lost followers, lost weapons, etc are bugs I've also encountered in Fallout 3 so defintely not just new to Fallout New Vegas (it's built from the same gaming engine as FO3). This just feels more like a rant than a review.

I was completely willing to deal with the bugs such as falling through rocks, etc. They weren't my main concern in this review and just put them as an added displeasure. However, the bug I did mention was on their blog for some time with no mention.

If you read the comments, several problems are outlined including the bug I had. I would NEVER write a bad review if it was just me having a problem. I'm not one to overlook user error.

I counted 69 QA testers in the credits. Yes, it's a huge game but my mentioned bug is a game stopper.

Perhaps if you had put in over 30 hours and suddenly couldn't continue the main story, you'd have a different P.O.V.

What I failed to mention in the review is that the bug also corrupts your autosave file.

I'm not looking to please people with my score, either. It's based on my experience with the game.

It's a game that has the potential to be a masterpiece but the bugs are keeping it far away from that.

I know exactly the type of bug you were dealing with. I can tell you that I have encountered no less than 30 times where I have attempted to load Halo Reach campaign and got kicked back to dashboard with a disc read error. I do not mean the Halo Reach main menu, but the Xbox live dash board. The wait to reload the game was excruiating (and usually didn't resolve itself until I reinstalled the game to my HDD). To me, that is a show stopper -- the campaign was completely unplayable. News of it was reported shortly after release (Kotaku, Joystiq) and Microsoft/Bungie has yet to fix it.

Of course, we're talking about another game here. It would be highly improbable for you to be the only person to encounter the bug you mentioned - I asked if you contacted customer service. As a consumer, you have the right to get a fix. I have contacted microsoft about my Halo Reach bug - and all I got was a work around. Wearing a cowboy hat appears to be a work around for your issue. If wearing a cowboy hat on the strip fixes the problem and allows you to play the game, why should people not buy the game on black friday again? Because of all the bugs posted on the Bethesda blog that weren't mentioned in the review?

I don't think it's cool you encountered a bug that prevented you from playing. But alot of what I'm reading here is frustration. I was expecting more game review like information -- what's the genre of the game, the main story, what's the gameplay like, the sound/graphics. You covered those things -- in the last few sentences of the last paragraph. Any gamerchix that rolled this way for a review wouldn't step within 50 yards of this game, especially over a bug they may or may not encounter. What if a miracle bug fix comes rolling out tomorrow and this review isn't updated saying all problems solved? They'll be missing out.

This is my review based on what my experience was like. That's all I can do. I won't write a review on the "what ifs".

Again, I stand by what I said. If I experienced frustration, I'm not going to say, "Oh, it was just a little thing that I'm sure will go away, go buy it you'll love it." I feel that would be a huge disservice to anyone reading this.

I do encourage anyone who has had a different experience to write about it.
