There are times when being friends with someone who works for the development studio of your faviourite game gets you into all sorts of really cool preview events. Then there are times where preview events are just too filled with AWSOMENESS to be restrained to just a few elite gamers. The Gamestop ODST Truck Tour is an event that definitely falls into the latter category.
Kicking off the tour on August 22nd (just a short month before Halo 3: ODST drops into a store near you!), a converted Army truck made its way to the first tour stop, Redmond Town Center, where eager gamers had begun lining up well over three hours in advance of the truck's arrival. This is, after all, Halo that is being talked about here -and Halo is very serious business indeed.
Gamers were treated to a 10 - 15 minute playtest of two maps for the new Firefight mode, which pits a squadron of players against waves of the Covenant forces. Maps available for play were Security Zone and Crater, the latter which allows players to get a good experience of the new VISR, which replaces the regular Spartan overlay.
For gamers who have been living under a rock (or the rare gamer who truly doesn't enjoy eradicating the universe of both alien beings and parasites), Halo 3: ODST is a departure from the story of our usual Spartan Hero. Instead, the player joins a squad of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, or ODSTs, as they begin what is supposed to be a routine mission to the city of New Mombasa, Earth. Clearly, things do not go as planned, as the squad suddenly finds itself spiraling out of control after getting caught in the midst of an enormous EMP pulse from a retreating Covenant carrier. Upon waking up and kicking themselves out of a ruined drop pod, players will find themselves alone in the middle of a ruined New Mombasa with no communication, no backup, and no idea what has happened in the last six hours since crash down. While ODSTs don't have the same cybernetic upgrades that Spartans do, ODSTs make up for it in spades with their passion, determination and slightly psychotic willingness to die for a cause.
