Nabisco is at it again, but this time with a limited edition cookie to tie into Valentine’s Day. While doing a quick shopping run at my local Target store, I saw several packages sitting on the shelves. Wouldn’t you know, a pack jumped into my basket saying “try us, try us.” Who am I to argue with a pack of cookies?
I waited till Valentine’s Day to try them. I wanted make sure I had something special that day. The package was smaller than a regular package of original Oreo cookies – 10.7 oz. (21 cookies). The package cost the same as a regular package of Oreos – a little over $2.
When I first opened the package, I could smell the sweet cream cheese filling. It wasn’t overpoweringly bad; for me it was pleasantly sweet. I had a few regular Oreos around so I could do a side-by-side comparison. The Red Velvet Oreo cookie wasn’t any different from a regular Oreo. It was a similar size and shape, only difference was the red color. I didn’t notice any flavor difference.
The filling did remind me of cream cheese. It was sweeter than a regular Oreo’s cream filling. Since it was a sweeter filling, I was curious if milk would help or hinder the taste. To my pleasant surprise, the milk enhanced the taste. The cookie softened enough to have a more cake consistency when I bit into it. The flavor didn’t change – still tasted like an Oreo with a sweeter filling.
Would I purchase these again? Definitely. The extra sweetness of the filling had me hooked. But the price for the package was a bit difficult to swallow. The cookies should be consumed within a few days of opening to avoid them getting stale. Taking price out of the equation, I give them a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.
