I love to eat. You love to eat. She loves to eat. Amongst all of us, I’m sure we can find plenty of wonderful restaurants out there in the world of NOM to keep our bellies full and happy. I recently visited The WeatherVane in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
I have had a couple of recommendations to try this restaurant but had not had the opportunity until last Saturday. Jim, our friend Gary, and I were taking a trip to Chapel Hill early Saturday morning so I could peruse the many aisles and shelves of food stuffs at A Southern Season--a food and cookware store. As we walked towards the doors, Jim made a detour to The WeatherVane and after I mentioned this was the restaurant, I was almost trampled as Jim and Gary rushed in to feed their growling stomachs. As soon as we were seated, our waiter greeted us and took our drink order - water and coffee all around.
The Menu
As our waiter went to fetch our drinks, we began to look at our brunch menus. The menu had a very good selection of salads, appetizers, brunch items, lunches, and sandwiches. We all focused on the brunch items. Jim and Gary chose the Eye-Opener Breakfast Platter, which consisted of two eggs, bacon or sausage, grits or hash brown casserole, fresh fruit, and biscuit or toast, plus it was only $7! I was trying to choose between the French Toast, Breakfast Quesadilla or Pancakes (Chef’s Choice for the Day). Our waiter returned with our drinks, and I inquired about the pancake of the day for Saturday. I was informed the pancakes were butternut squash. At that point, the French Toast and quesadilla were forgotten and I ordered me some of those pancakes.
The Food
I don’t think we waited more 15 minutes and our food was delivered. I received a plate filled with three huge pancakes and warm maple syrup. The pancakes were perfectly done and a beautiful yellow in color. They were delicious! The pancakes were similar to pumpkin in flavor but not overpowering. They had a hint of cinnamon which made me love the pancakes and chef even more. I only ate two of three before I was sufficiently and happily stuffed.
Jim and Gary were each presented with 3 plates: eggs, hash browns and bacon on one, fruit on the second, and toast on the 3rd. The toast was not from a bag with brightly colored polka dots, but was baked there at the restaurant. The bacon was crispy and apparently very good, because Jim ate all his before I got a chance to ask for a bite. He did, however, offer me a bite of the hash brown casserole. It was creamy and cheesy. I almost snatched it off Jim’s plate but he must have seen the gleam in my eye, because he promptly inhaled the rest of the casserole. The boys only had a few bites of toast and fruit left so I’m guessing they were just as content with their meals as I was mine.
The Service
Our waiter was very attentive without being annoying. He kept our coffee and water cups filled. We did not have to wait long for the check when requested, and was also speedy getting our receipt back to us. He was top-notch.
I will definitely be returning to The WeatherVane. The food, service and prices are fantastic. And, I’m getting hungry just writing about it.
