At this year's Video Music Awards (VMA) I laughed - and I cried. With Kanye West being present, it was guaranteed to be a show. Russell Brand who apparently was trying to get into girls' pants that night hosted the VMAs. Among them were Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Megan Fox. Nonetheless, the VMAs paid tribute to the King of Pop - Michael Jackson. Some may not be fans of MJ, but I grew up listening to him and fell in love with his music regardless of any allegations brought against him from the media. The night started out with Madonna talking about meeting him for the first time and emphasized that regardless of everything he has been through, and the pop icon he has become, he was still human. The tribute continued on with a performance by dancers to his most famous songs including Thriller and Smooth Criminal. There was also a special appearance by his sister Janet Jackson. She performed the song Scream that she and Michael performed together back in the 90s. From listening to Madonna speak about him and watching the performance, I was such a girl and could not keep my eyes dry at all!
Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award but was interrupted during her acceptance speech by the infamous Kanye West. I guess if things don't go his way, he has to put in his two cents and let everyone know that Beyonce should have won that award. Sadly, that mild interruption took away from her but when Beyonce won the Best Video of the Year award she was a true lady and handed the stage over to Taylor so that she could finish her speech. Because of Kanye's rant about Beyonce's video being better than Taylor's, the fans were booing him all night. It was up to Russell Brand to remind everyone to love each other and get along because that is what Michael would have wanted.
I would say the best live performance at the VMAs was Taylor Swift's "You Belong with Me". Her performance took place in the NYC subway as they took the train to Radio City Music Hall - it was clever and energetic! Even though Pink performed above ground, I enjoyed Taylor's much more.
Lady Gaga had some catchy song but WHAT was she wearing!? I think she changed into about three different outfits. The first one wasn't that bad, she just looked like she was doing to a masquerade but the others were just shocking! At one point she went up to get her award and she had a red dress/suit that covered her entire body and face. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse, she changed into another outfit that looked like a bird's nest mixed with an Eskimo. Either way the VMAs had ups and downs but it was still amazing and entertaining to watch. And of course it had the trailer for New Moon, which I was excited about.
