October is here, and more importantly, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month! Whether you're male or female, don’t be afraid to do a regular self breast exam. If you’re not sure how to do one, check with your doctor or nurse practitioner. They are trained and can help you recognize the warning signs for breast cancer. Sure, asking them may be uncomfortable at first, but you may learn life saving signs. If you’re still shy about asking a doctor or nurse, slowly start off by learning from the multiple websites illustrating how to do the exam. But, having a doctor or nurse practitioner do the exam is the best method! As always, consult with your doctor or nurse practitioner for the best information.
On top of taking care of yourself by conducting the self breast exam, there are multiple ways you can help with the fight. Retailers may offer a discount or donate a percentage of their proceeds to Breast Cancer Charities, awareness organizations, and/or to help find a cure. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month site has a link for some of these retailers.

If you don’t have extra money to make purchases or to donate, you can also donate your valuable time by raising money for a local 5k walk. One of the more notable “race for the cure” is the Susan G. Komen walks. If your October is slammed packed and you don’t have extra time, The Susan G. Komen site provides you with all of the locations offering events throughout the year.

You can also donate goods to a local charity, that can use the profits to help the charities as well. Pickupsforbreastcancer.org is part of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. On the website, you can donate used clothing and/or household goods to the non-profit organization. At this time, pick ups are done in the South Florida Tri-County area. For those of us outside of Florida, check with your local Goodwill to see how your donations can be used.
In our economy, money, time, and donations can still be an issue for us. We may not have any extra money, time or items we can spare with. However, The Breast Cancer Site has made it easy and free to help donate a free mammogram. You don’t need to provide an email address or sign up for anything. Just one small click on the button in the middle of the screen, and you have helped fund a life saving / early detection mammogram. Visit your local library, and if they have a computer station, or at any computer station available to you, visit their homepage. A 2 second click can help someone’s life. The site also has other organizations that you can help out with just a click.
